An Introduction to Canterbury

The City of Canterbury lies on the River Stour in Kent, South East England, about 55 miles from London. It is a beautiful city full of exquisite architecture, exciting attractions, shops, theatres and restaurants. Dominating the city centre is the magnificent Canterbury Cathedral, one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England.

Things to do in Canterbury

West Gate Towers and Museum offer a scenic view as well as history surrounding the Gaol. Canterbury Cathedral is a world heritage site, as well as S.t Martins and S.t Augustines Abbey. The Museum of Canterbury is housed in a medieval building and shows ancient history whilst Druidstone park is an enchanting woodland park with a bluebell trail. Chaucer's Canterbury Tales also come alive in the city at Canterbury Tales.

Getting to Canterbury

By Bus and Coach

National Express coaches run to Canterbury from London Victoria Coach Station, it is also well served by Stagecoach East Kent buses from Canterbury Bus Station.

By Air

London Airports are all approximately under two hours drive from Canterbury city centre. Visitors arriving at any of London's airports and wanting to travel by public transport to the area must first travel to central London and change to a connecting coach or train service.

By Car

Canterbury has excellent road links with the M20 (M25/ M26) and M2 motorways, providing easy links with London and its airports.

By Rail

Canterbury has two mainline stations, East and West, and is served by frequent trains to and from London Charing Cross and London Victoria, as well as to and from Dover Priory and Ramsgate. If you travel by Eurostar to Ashford International there is a regular train service to Canterbury West. Whitstable and Herne Bay stations are both on a direct line from London Victoria.
